Epic Universe 2025: 15 First-Timer Mistakes I Saw (and Made) – and How to Avoid Them

Epic Universe finally opened in May 2025 – and while it’s stunning, I learned the hard way that there are real mistakes that can make your trip stressful. During my family’s first visit, we saw so many guests making the same errors over and over (and yep, we made a few too).

Here’s your honest guide to the top mistakes first-time visitors make at Epic Universe – and how to avoid them. If you’re planning your first trip, you’ll be ahead of the curve.

Mistake #1: Not Using Early Park Admission

Universal hotel guests (and those that book with me) get Early Park Admission into Epic Universe – and that hour makes a huge difference. We watched the crowds build fast, and families who arrived at the regular opening were already behind.

βœ… Fix It: Stay at a Universal Hotel (I have a guide on the hotels here). You can also book with a U-Preferred Travel Agent, like me for some perks that don’t require you to stay on-site.

Mistake #2: Underestimating Park Size and Walking Time

Epic Universe isn’t small. The hub and portals mean a lot of walking, especially in the heat. We underestimated how long it took to go from one land to another – and we lost time we could have spent riding rides.

βœ… Fix It: Build in extra time for transitions and plan rides in clusters (for example, do all the Nintendo rides you can before moving to How to Train Your Dragon. We thought we could easily loop back around when the queues were shorter. Nope.

Mistake #3: Skipping Dining Reservations

Restaurants like those in Nintendo and How to Train Your Dragon book out fast. We saw families stuck with very long waits.

βœ… Fix It: Book dining as soon as reservations open in the Universal Orlando app. Mobile ordering also really helps for quick eats and moody kids. You could also book with me, and I will let you know when your dining reservations are available to choose from! You just let me know where, and I’ll do the rest!

Mistake #4: Trying to Do Epic Universe in One Day

Epic Universe is a full-day park at minimum, but realistically, I think you need two days to enjoy it all. We pushed hard to fit everything in, and it was exhausting.

βœ… Fix It: Plan at least 2 days, even if you spend half-days there. Then you can catch shows, rides, and nighttime effects.

Mistake #5: Forgetting Tech Prep

Phones die fast when you’re using maps, mobile ordering, and taking photos. We ran into a low battery before midday.

βœ… Fix It: Bring a power bank, download the Universal app in advance, and log in your payment details.

Mistake #6: Not Budgeting for Add-Ons

Hogwarts merch, wand interactions, specialty snacks… these add up quickly. It can be surprising for sure!

βœ… Fix It: Plan for souvenirs, snacks, and at least one special add-on. Setting a budget up front saves stress. We got the Universal gift card when we were there and saved a ton of money! Plus, it kept us in our budget.

Mistake #7: Leaving Before Nighttime

Epic Universe truly comes alive at night with lights, projections, and nighttime entertainment. Many families had to leave early and missed it.

βœ… Fix it: Pace your day so you can stay until closing. It’s tricky if you have little kids, but I took mine for a midday nap so they wouldn’t miss the fountain show.

Mistake #8: Not Preparing for Florida Weather

We got hit with a sun-rain combo – classic Florida. Some families had to buy overpriced ponchos in the park. People either had plastic flying in their face or they were under cover, missing precious ride time.

βœ… Fix It: Pack good ponchos, sunscreen, and a small umbrella in your park bag.

Mistake #9: Forgetting to Plan for Kids’ Energy Levels

Epic Universe is exciting but overwhelming. We saw meltdowns all day long.

βœ… Fix It: Use rest spots, shows, and shaded areas for downtime. Even short breaks can save your day! (You need to check out The Untrainable Dragon.)

Mistake #10: Overlooking Rider Swap & Height Requirements

Families with kids of different ages struggled at the rides.

βœ… Fix It: Check height requirements ahead of time and use Rider Swap.
